Oogenesis
The formation of the ovum (mature female gamete) from undifferentiated germ cells is called oogenesis. This process takes place in the ovaries (female gonads). Oogenesis consists of three stages known as the multiplication phase, growth phase, and maturation phase.
Cell Division
Cell division involves the formation of new daughter cells from the parent cells. It is a part of the cell cycle that takes place in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Cell division is required for three main reasons:
Compare and contrast phases of meiosis I with phases of meiosis II in terms of the events taking place and the behaviour of chromosomes.

Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. These cells are our sex cells – sperm in males, eggs in females. During meiosis, one cell divides twice to form four daughter cells.
The similarities between phases of meiosis I with phases of meiosis II are as follows:
1. Both occur only in eukaryotes.
2. G phase of interphase usually occurs first.
3. Production of daughter cells is based on the parent cell’s genetic material.
4. Four phases occur: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
5. They are the means of sexual reproduction in plants, animals, and fungi.
