Both variables must be qualitative in nature. That is measured on a nominal level.
When data is in the form of frequencies of occurrence within mutually exclusive categories, the scale of measurement used is nominal.
Chi -square statistics use nominal (categorical) or ordinal level data but mostly nominal, this test uses frequencies.
Since, Chi-square test analyzes categorical data. It means that the data has been counted and divided into categories. It will not work with parametric or continuous data (Interval, Ratio data)
