Introduction

Buffers get used for resisting particular solution's pH almost constant while the addition of low amount of acid/base solution. Buffers get prepared by adding weak acids with their particular conjugate salts or weak bases with their particular conjugate salts.

Solution

Since it is known that buffers are prepared by combining weak acid+conjugate salt or weak base+conjugate salt

0.29 M hydroiodic acid +0.20 M sodium iodide

In the given solution, hydroiodic acid (HI) is a strong acid and sodium iodide (NaI) is its sodium salt.

Since, the combination of strong acid and conjugate salt does not form a buffer solution.

Thus the solution is not a buffer system.

0.19 M acetic acid +0.21 M sodium acetate

In the given solution, the acetic acid (CH3COOH) is a weak acid and sodium acetate (CH3COONa) is its conjugate salt (sodium salt).

The resultant solution will be the combination of weak acid+conjugate salt.

Since buffers are well defined as the combination of a weak acid and its conjugate salt.

Thus the given solution is a good buffer system.
