To find the empirical formula of a compound, the following steps should be followed.

  1. Find the ratio of elements present in the compound- Let us consider x% of element A, y% of element B, and z% of element C in the compound. Then the ratio would be x:y:z.
  2. Divide the ratio of each element by their atomic mass- xAtomic Mass of a:yAtomic Mass of b:zAtomic Mass of c
  3. Find a whole number ratio by dividing each number by the least number -Let X, Y, Z be the whole number ratio  X:Y: Z
  4. The empirical formula of the compound will be AXBYCZ

To find a molecular formula from the empirical formula, the following equation is used.

Molecular formula = n x Empirical Formula

where n=Molecular MassEmpirical Formula Mass
