Athol Fugard, a South African playwright born in 1932, is the author of Tsotsi, his only novel. Although it was written earlier, it was not published until 1980 and later adapted into a film in the year 2005. The novel has been published several times, with a 2019 edition republished by Canongate. It was also selected as one of the 70 books in the Big Jubilee Read for the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II, which celebrated the works of Commonwealth writers.
