Why Join the War Effort?
By August 4, 1914, World War I had broken out between
Germany, France, Russia, and Britain. Canada was still
a colony (under the control) of Britain, and many young
Canadian men signed up to go off to war. Compared to
working on a farm or in a factory, it seemed like a great
adventure. However, some men were not wanted because
of their race or ethnicity. Others resisted going to war and
were called cowardly and unpatriotic. Still others from
countries considered enemies were labelled "aliens" and
put in labour camps. The war would eventually change
them all.
During the war, women fought to improve their own
lives and increase their participation in society. Women
earned the right to vote and to be in govemment. They
also participated in war as nurses and factory workers.
Attitudes about women's roles in society were challenged
and changed throughout wartime.
