The solubility of a solute in a solvent is determined by the strength of the intermolecular forces between solutes and solvents. Generally, if the polarity of solutes matches the solvents, they will be soluble. For example - NaCl is solube in water because both the molecules are polar.

The process of dissolution is favorable when solute-solvent are stronger than solvent-solvent or solute-solute bonds. The process releases energy when solute and solvent are mixed,i.e., it is an exothermic process.
