Question

can you Explain How electrons are arranged in the first 20 elements?

Expert Solution
Step 1: Electron arrangement.

The electrons are arranged according to Aufbau's principle, Pauli's exclusion principle, and Hund's rule.

  • Aufbau's principle: States that electrons occupy orbitals in the increasing order of energy. According to Aufbau's principle, the electrons are arranged in the orbitals in the following order. 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f 5d 6p 7s 5f 6d 7p.
  • Pauli's exclusion principle: It states that no two electrons can have the value of four quantum numbers the same.
  • Hund's rule: It states that the pairing of electrons in an orbital takes place only after all the orbitals in that energy level are half-filled.

Each orbital can accommodate a maximum of two electrons. An s orbital has only one orbital and can accommodate a maximum of two electrons. p orbitals have three orbitals and can accommodate six electrons. d orbitals have five orbitals and can accommodate ten electrons. f orbitals have seven orbitals and can accommodate fourteen electrons.
