Question: Calculate the percent yield for the E-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one (benzalacetone) Please show and describe all calculations. Thank you
Preparation of E-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one (benzalacetone)
Reaction:
CHO
NaOH
CH;COCH3
For experiment i used:
- 8.0 ml of benzaldehyde
- 16 ml of acetone
- 2ml(2.5 M)aqueous sodium hydroxide
- At the end of this time, add dilute hydrochloric acid slowly until the
solution is just acid to litmus and transfer the mixture to a separatory
funnel, rinsing the conical flask with 15 ml ether.
- wash with 15 mL water and dry them over MgSO4
- Filter the solution, washing the desiccant with 5 mL ether
Note: I collected 4.13 grams of E-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one
(benzalacetone) at the end of this experiment.
