Introduction

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling condition that affects the central nervous system (CNS), i.e., the brain and spinal cord. It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the protective outer covering of the nerve fibers, called the myelin sheath. The result is inflammation and scarring of nerve fibers due to the loss of myelin, leading to permanent damage to the nervous system as the disease progresses. Alternately, MS can also occur due to the loss of myelin-producing cells resulting in improperly formed myelin layer.

The most common symptoms include, numbness, tremors, unsteady gait and inability to move or walk without assistance.
