Amino Acids:

Amino acids are chemical molecules that contain the functional groups amino[a] (NH+3) and carboxylate (CO2), as well as a side chain (R group) unique to each amino acid. Carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and nitrogen (N) are present in every amino acid; sulphur (S) is found in the side chains of cysteine and methionine, and selenium (Se) is present in the less common amino acid selenocysteine.

They are categorised as alpha- (-), beta- (-), gamma- (-), or delta- (-) amino acids based on the positions of the fundamental structural functional groups; other classifications include polarity, ionisation, and side chain group type (aliphatic, acyclic, aromatic, containing hydroxyl or sulfur, etc.).

R denotes a side chain specific to each amino acid in the structure presented at the top of the page. The –carbon is the carbon atom adjacent to the carboxyl group. -amino acids are amino acids with an amino group that is directly linked to the -carbon. [19] Proline and hydroxyproline, both secondary amines, are among them.
