Question

Because of environmental degradation, water scarcity is becoming a big problem. Identify one effective and sustainable solution and explain how that can be done.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The deterioration of the environment because of the depletion of various resources like air, water, soil leads to the destruction of living organisms' habitat. When such natural habitats of the organisms get destroyed by depleting natural resources and pollution, the environment is also affected.

Step 2

Water is one of the most important resources present on planet Earth. Water scarcity is a big issue in today's world that is caused both by humans and natural disasters. Water shortage is the absence of sufficient accessible water resources to meet the needs of the individuals. A significant part of the water is wasted, contaminated, and unsustainably used.

The sustainable use of water can reduce water scarcity. Improvement of water infrastructure is a priority nowadays because water conservation and efficiency are key components of sustainable water management. The use of clean technology like solar desalination and smart irrigation systems for water efficiency and control should be done. It applies even more to the agriculture and farming sector, which is the largest consumer of water.

One effective and sustainable solution to water scarcity is rainwater harvesting. It can be done by storing the water which precipitates as rain. For this, proper drainage channels are made on the roof so that the rainwater should be stored in the storage tank. This water could be used for various household purposes. Recycling of wastewater also reduces scarcity and lessens the pressure on groundwater and other natural water bodies. Groundwater recharge is a process through which the water on the surface seeps inside to increase the groundwater level. This also helps in the water conservation.
