a) Mg + HNO3 -------> H2 + Mg(NO3)2 

Since in RHS we have 2 NO3 ions. Hence making it 2 in LHS also 

=> Mg + 2 HNO3 -------> H2 + Mg(NO3)2 

Now all the atoms are equal in both side of the reaction 

hence the balanced reaction is 

=> Mg + 2 HNO3 -------> H2 + Mg(NO3)2 

Step 2

b) CaC2 + H2O -----------> Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 

Since we have 2 O in RHS. Hence making it 2 in LHS also

=> CaC2 + 2 H2O -----------> Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 

Now all the atoms are equal in both side of the reaction 

hence the balanced reaction is 

=> CaC2 + 2 H2O -----------> Ca(OH)2 + C2H2
