As shown in the figure, a light beam travels from air, through olive oil, and then into water. If the angle of refraction ?2 for the light in the olive oil is 33.2°, determine the angle of incidence ?1 in air and the angle of refraction ?3 in water. The index of refraction for olive oil is 1.47. ?1 = ? ° ?3 = ? °
Refraction of Light
Refraction is a change in the direction of light rays when they travel from one medium to another. It is the bending of light when it goes through different media.
Angle of Refraction
Light is considered by many scientists to have dual nature, both particle nature and wave nature. First, Particle nature is one in which we consider a stream of packets of energy called photons. Second, Wave nature is considering light as electromagnetic radiation whereas part of it is perceived by humans. Visible spectrum defined by humans lies in a range of 400 to 700 nm wavelengths.
Index of Refraction of Diamond
Diamond, the world’s hardest naturally occurring material and mineral known, is a solid form of the element carbon. The atoms are arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. They exist in a huge variety of colours. Also, they are one of the best conductors of heat and have a very high melting point.

![### Refraction of Light Through Different Media
The diagram illustrates the refraction of light as it passes through three different media: air, oil, and water.
1. **Media and Indices of Refraction:**
- **Air** (labeled as \( n_1 \)): The topmost layer where light initially travels.
- **Oil** (labeled as \( n_2 \)): The middle layer where light bends for the first time.
- **Water** (labeled as \( n_3 \)): The bottom layer where light bends again.
2. **Angles of Incidence and Refraction:**
- \( \theta_1 \): The angle of incidence in air.
- \( \theta_2 \): The angle of refraction in oil.
- \( \theta_3 \): The angle of refraction in water.
3. **Light Path:**
- The light ray enters from the air and hits the boundary with the oil layer, changing direction due to the change in the refractive index.
- It again changes direction when moving from the oil to the water layer, following Snell's Law \( (n_1 \sin \theta_1 = n_2 \sin \theta_2 = n_3 \sin \theta_3) \).
This diagram serves to explain how light behaves when passing through different substances with varying optical densities. Understanding this principle is fundamental in optics.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F0b976287-7988-4bb5-8c19-f0be53c69b5f%2Fbfd8f227-5f17-4e3e-b49c-7618fdce7963%2F0a0flam_processed.gif&w=3840&q=75)
