Arêtes Cirques Horns
Explain how the following forms:
- Arêtes
- Cirques
- Horns
1. Aretes: Aretes is a glacial erosional landform, formed in mountainous regions. Aretes are narrow ridges which are eroded remanent of glaciated terrain. They are formed when two glaciers move along both sides of a mountain and thus carve away the flanks of the mountain and what remains is only the elevated ridge like portion. it may act as a divide for the glaciers. Aretes can also be formed when two cirques form at both sides of the mountain and advances headward erosion.
2. Cirques: cirque is a glacial erosional landform. It is an amphitheater like structural feature usually formed by the erosion of a mountain flank. Glaciers erode large number of debris, and it forms bowl like depressions on the base of the mountain from which they form. Thus, to the head of the valley cirques develop, where plucking of debris is high. Cirques after retreat of glacier forms cirque lakes.
