II. APPLICATION – ANALYSIS: THE HEART OF THE MATTER. Read and carefully choose the most appropriate response among the choices given in each situation.

1. After graduating from college with a degree in science, Randy finds a solid job in his profession, married, and had two sons. Twelve years later, he moves to another company promising him steady advancement within his managerial ranks. A devoted family man, Randy admires his wife’s dedication to raising their boys. But he also observes that his sons, approaching their teen years, benefit greatly from his fatherly friendship and counsel-especially as they approach what he and his wife realize could prove to be a difficult transitional period in their upbringing. So, he has made a commitment to spend plenty of time with them, playing basketball and helping with their schoolwork.  Where should Randy focus his attention?
*

A. Randy should pursue his MBA, for the given reason that the degree could advance him rapidly to the managerial rank. This means better financial gains. Besides, the university is just nearby and that the program is offered in an evening-and-weekend program, which means his time with his family will not suffer much. He just needs to manage his time between his studies and family matters.

B. Since Randy’s sons are approaching their teen years, he should consider and weigh his plans of pursuing higher studies and his familial duties very seriously. It is a fact that children in these transition years need guidance and directions from their significant others, especially their parents. They need the presence of both parents. After all, this will only be a stage that will eventually be gone through with. His MBA can wait; he can pursue it later. Family comes first. Too, his plan of pursuing higher studies as a ticket to higher financial gain is first and foremost for his family.

C. Perhaps Randy could discuss his plans of pursuing an MBA with his wife and both can discern re the pros and cons of such decision and deed. They could further discuss whatever the outcome would be to their young boys and to their family as well, i.e. the demands of being in the university again. He could study and continue being a good father and husband at the same time although juggling his might prove as a challenge, but he can pursue what’s close to his heart.
2. Mary works as a secretary in a department within a branch of a large corporation. The branch director has decided that the job of her department director, Jim, will soon be discontinued. Although Mary and a new few others in her department have this knowledge, Jim does not. For a few weeks, Jim is directed to work on an array of special projects at his home office. In the meantime, an employee from a different department is told to move in to Jim’s office. The branch director instructs Mary and other support staff to change Jim’s voice mail, move his files out of the office, and erase his name from his assigned parking spot. Mary is told the human resources department will call Jim to let him know what has taken place. That week Jim calls Mary because he cannot get into his voice mail. He wants to know if there are any technical problems about which he should know. Mary feels torn: should she tell him the truth now or should she rely on human resources staff to tell him?
*

A. Much as Mary is torn from telling the truth to Jim, she has no duty nor the right to do so. She should follow the instructions of the branch director because that’s the most proper and professional thing to do. After all, not telling the truth to Jim regarding his situation does not necessarily lying to him about the same.

B. Mary should divulge to Jim the real situation, after all the director did not keep her duty in informing Jim immediately regarding his situation. Secondly, she feels justified that there is a lapse in the duty of the human resources not to inform Jim immediately re his lot and just asking Mary and the staff to remove his stuff, change his voice mail, remove his files out of the office, etc. without observing the protocol. She will just inform the HRD immediately of her decision and action.

C. Although Mary may feel for Jim and is convinced that there is failure in the duty of the HRD in informing Jim re his status immediately as per instruction of the branch director, she should remain professional in conducting her duty as a secretary. She could tell or refer Jim to call the HRD and not to divulge anything. Even if the HRD was unprofessional in accomplishing its duty, it does not justify the act of revealing to Jim anything that has to do with his being removed from his job, after all, that’s what a professional secretary’s duty is all about.
