Introduction
In order to win an election, candidates must garner half the votes. In election politics, the "median voter" represents a candidate whose ideology places him exactly halfway between the remaining voters on his left and half of the remaining voters on his right. If a politician can convince the median voter to vote for him, he will guarantee himself half of the vote. If his opponent takes a more conservative or liberal stance, he will certainly lose. So, to at least force a tie, the other candidate must also mimic the median voter's preference. As a consequence, candidates race to the centre in the hope of becoming unbeatable.
