Nutrition is a process through which we acquire food that is necessary to generate energy through respiration. Energy is required to perform all the functions necessary to stay alive. It is also essential for the growth and development of the body. In the holozoic type of nutrition, the ingestion of raw material takes place followed by digestion, absorption, assimilation and egestion.
Digestion is a process through which we drive glucose from the raw material we eat. The food we eat contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. They all are complex substances. The carbohydrates are broken down into disaccharides and monosaccharides. Fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerols. Proteins are polypeptides and are broken down into dipeptides and then further into amino acids.
These simpler molecules are absorbed by the blood vessels and lacteals and transported to the cells where the synthesis of ATP takes place in the presence of oxygen.
