According to Urban II, what were the motives and reasons for the crusades?
Urban II, original name Odo of Châtillon-sur-Marne or Lagery or Lagny, French Odon or Eudes de Châtillon-sur-Marne or Lagery or Lagny, (born c. 1035, Châtillon-sur-Marne, or Lagery, or Lagny, Champagne, France—died July 29, 1099, Rome [Italy]), was the head of the Roman Catholic Church (1088–99).
The Crusades were a series of military operations organised by Christian nations to regain sovereignty of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim hands. Between 1095 CE and 1270 CE, there were eight officially sanctioned crusades and many more unauthorised ones. Each war had various degrees of success and failure, but the overall goal of preserving Jerusalem and the Holy Land in Christian hands failed.Nonetheless, the attractiveness of the crusading ideal persisted until the 16th century CE, and the goal of this essay is to explore what motivated crusaders, from the Pope to the humblest fighter, particularly for the very first expedition that created a model to be followed thereafter.
