According to GUNS,GERMS AND STEEL, How was animal domestication possible? Which animal species were domesticated, and why? In what ways did domestic animals impact human life?
Depending on GUNS, GERMS and STEEL, domestication of animals was possible through the help of the procedure called selective breeding. Those animals which possesed the desirable traits were selected and bred, for the purpose of passing these traits to the upcoming generations. The first animal that were domesticated were the goats. The domestication of animals, however required meeting some criteria like the criteria of being distinct in terms of genetics from their ancestors and the criteria of being more human-friendly in terms of genetics. In this way, the wild animals were adapted to meet the requirements of mankind.
The goats were one of the species which were first to be domesticated. The goats were domesticated for the purpose of obtaining milk as well as meat from them. Sheep are another species which were also domesticated for the purpose of obtaining wool from them. Chickens were also domesticated in order to obtain eggs from them. Therefore, these species of animals were domesticated for commercial purposes. Horses, oxens and cows are other species which were also domesticated for transporation, ploughing and grazing purposes.
