Answer each question using the ball-and-stick model of compound A.
Draw a stereoisomer for A and give its IUPAC name.
Draw a constitutional isomer that contains an OH group and give its
IUPAC name.
Stereoisomers have the same composition and differ in the orientation of different groups in the three-dimensional space.
Compound A and its stereoisomer can be drawn as shown in the figure.
In compound A the isobutyl group and the hydroxyl group are on the same side. Thus the compound is cis form as the two bulky groups are on the same side. Whereas the stereoisomer of compound A has the isobutyl group on one side and hydroxyl group on the other side and is trans isomer. The IUPAC name of the compound is 2-(isobutyl)-cyclopentanol. Thus the compound A is cis-2-(isobutyl)-cyclopentanol and the stereoisomer is trans-2-(isobutyl)-cyclopentanol.
