Dred Scott v. Sandford was a supreme court case of 1857 where the court ruled that the US constitution did not extend US citizenship to Black people of African descent, irrespective of free or enslaved. The supreme court's ruling was overturned when the reconstruction ear amendments were passed in the US after the civil war. The reconstruction era amendments included the US constitution's 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. The 13th Amendment did reverse the decision of Dred Scott since the 14th Amendment made them citizens of the US, and slavery became unconstitutional. Under the US constitution, all its citizens were created equal, and it guaranteed them the right to life, liberty, and other rights of bill rights. However, the passing of several black codes limited African Americans' freedom, such as option B, the arresting of unemployed men, and option C requiring a special pass for interstate travel. The fourteenth Amendment had a huge impact on the Scott decision since the case was related to the citizenship of African Americans; according to this Amendment, all people born in the US were given citizenship and required all states to treat their citizens equally. It gave Dred Scott citizenship and all other African Americans born in the US by overturning the court decision. Almost all black codes were against the 14th Amendment, as equal treatment of black people was challenged in many states. The states gave African Americans citizenship but were not ready to treat them similarly to white people. Black codes like option a, no gathering after dark, and all the given black codes were against the equality clause of the 14th Amendment since no white people were required to do any of it. The 15th Amendment affected the Scott decision since the court denied all the rights, including the right to vote, since African Americans were not citizens of the US. The passage of the 15th Amendment ensured the right to vote for African Americans and made it unconstitutional to deny the right to vote based on race. Black codes like the option weakened the Amendment. Black codes like option D require a literacy test for blacks to vote, option G poll tax to vote, and option I registering to vote only with a white person's approval, making it difficult for African Americans to vote in the elections.
