Expert Solution
Step 1
Answer a.
Heat treatment is a combination of controlled heating and cooling operations. It is an crucial operation in the manufacturing process of many machine parts and tools which imports high mechanical properties to steel. Material is heated to a specified temperature and then cooled at a different controlled rate for the improvement of mechanical properties of materials like increasing hardness, relieving stresses etc.
Heat treatment processes have normally three main steps :
- Initially the material is heated to a specific temperature (in the range of up to 2400 °F / 1316 °C)
- Soaking, or maintaining the specific temperature for a certain amount of time (varying from seconds to more than 60 hours)
- Finally the material is cooled at a suitable rate by a particular method as per requirement i.e.it can be cooled rapidly, slowly (in the furnace), or can be quenched (using water, brine, oils, polymer solutions, salts, or gases).
