QUESTION 3 A

Transcribed Image Text:Question 3.
A structural component made from a steel alloy is loaded such that its stress state can
be described by the following principal stresses:
o, = 600 MPa,
O11 = 500 MPa,
Ош — 100 MPа
The yield stress of the steel in simple tension is 330 MPa.
(a) Determine if the component will yield using the von Mises yield criterion.
(b) The assembly the component forms part of is subsequently redesigned such that the
component's stress state can now be described by the following principal stresses:
700 MPа,
0, = 800 MPa,
O11 = 850 MPa
Determine if the component will yield after the redesign using the von Mises yield
criterion.
(b) (i) Explain why the component fails in one of the above stress states, but not in
the other.
(ii) Write down an explanation of how the von Mises criterion determines whether
or not yield will occur in ductile metals.
(iii) Will the component fracture and become unusable if yield is occurring at some
point within the material? Explain your answer.
