TNB Generation Fuel Mix for 2009 and 2019
(b) The two pie charts shown in Figure 4 depict the change in generation fuel mix over the past
10 years, which are extracted from the annual reports of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) – the
national electric power supplier of Malaysia – of financial years 2009 and 2019 respectively.
It is observed that there are three main types of fuel used by TNB, which are coal, gas, and
hydroelectric power. The usage of gas remains roughly the same over 10 years, a slight
decrease from 59% in 2009 to 42% in 2019. Meanwhile, the usage of coal has been expanded
greatly, from 26% in 2009 to 54% in 2019. At the same time, the usage of hydroelectric power
shrunk from 15% in 2009 to 3% in 2019.
Assess the reasons for this drastic change in the generation fuel mix composition from 2009 to
2019. Evaluate whether TNB is still committed to renewable energy based on the data available
from their annual reports.
