A legendary Dutch boy saved Holland by plugging a hole in a dike with his finger, which is 1.10 cm in diameter. (a) If the hole was 1.80 m below the surface of the North Sea (density 1030 kg/m3), what was the force on his finger? 3 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. N (b) If he pulled his finger out of the hole, how long would it take the released water to fill 1 acre of land to a depth of 1 ft assuming the hole remained constant in size? (A typical U.S. family of four uses 1 acre-foot of water, 1234 m3, in 1 year.) 33
Fluid Pressure
The term fluid pressure is coined as, the measurement of the force per unit area of a given surface of a closed container. It is a branch of physics that helps to study the properties of fluid under various conditions of force.
Gauge Pressure
Pressure is the physical force acting per unit area on a body; the applied force is perpendicular to the surface of the object per unit area. The air around us at sea level exerts a pressure (atmospheric pressure) of about 14.7 psi but this doesn’t seem to bother anyone as the bodily fluids are constantly pushing outwards with the same force but if one swims down into the ocean a few feet below the surface one can notice the difference, there is increased pressure on the eardrum, this is due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure.
![**A Legendary Dutch Boy's Tale: A Physics Perspective**
In this scenario, a legendary Dutch boy saves Holland by plugging a hole in a dike with his finger, having a diameter of 1.10 cm.
**(a)** If the hole was 1.80 m below the surface of the North Sea (with a density of 1030 kg/m³), what was the force exerted on his finger?
- **Incorrect Answer Attempt:** 3 N
- **Feedback:** Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double-check your calculations.
**(b)** If the boy removed his finger from the hole, how long would it take for the released water to inundate 1 acre to a depth of 1 foot, assuming the hole size remains constant? For context, a typical U.S. family of four uses an acre-foot of water (equivalent to 1234 m³) in one year.
- **Incorrect Answer Attempt:** 33 days
- **Feedback:** Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double-check your calculations.
