Expert Solution
Step 1

Cytochrome c is a critical component of the respiratory electron transport chain that is found in bacteria or mitochondria of eukaryots. It forms a part of the four-membered electron transport chain which controls the ATP synthesis (cellular respiration). It is involved in the reduction of molecular oxygen (O2) to water (H2O), where four electrons, four protons, and one molecule of oxygen are consumed to form two water molecules. The transfer of electrons happens through the heme group in Cytochrome c. The metal center present in Cytochrome c is an iron, heme bound iron. The function of the protein depends on the interconversion between Fe3+ and Fe2+ oxidation states. Fe3+ is the oxidized state which accepts an electron from the donor species. Fe2+ is the reduced state which donates an electron to the acceptor species.
