Recall from earlier this semester- what does heterogeneous mean? a. A mixture of chemicals which contains a gas is heterogeneous. b. A mixture of chemicals which contains a solid is heterogeneous. c. A mixture of chemicals present in two or more phases is heterogeneous. d. A mixture of chemicals which are all in the same phase is heterogeneous.
States of Matter
The substance that constitutes everything in the universe is known as matter. Matter comprises atoms which in turn are composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons. Different atoms combine together to give rise to molecules that act as a foundation for all kinds of substances. There are five states of matter based on their energies of attraction, namely solid, liquid, gases, plasma, and BEC (Bose-Einstein condensates).
Chemical Reactions and Equations
When a chemical species is transformed into another chemical species it is said to have undergone a chemical reaction. It consists of breaking existing bonds and forming new bonds by changing the position of electrons. These reactions are best explained using a chemical equation.
|
|
|
The term hetero means different. Which means the mixture should be in different environment so that we can see it. Therefore -
A - A mixture of chemicals which contains a gas is heterogeneous.
Explanation - All gases are in homogeneous phase.
B - A mixture of chemicals which contains a solid is heterogeneous.
Explanation - Solid is a single phase thus it is homogeneous.
C - A mixture of chemicals present in two or more phases is heterogeneous.
Explanation - The mixture in two or more phase is heterogeneous.
D - A mixture of chemicals which are all in the same phase is heterogeneous.
Explanation - SAme phase mixtures are homogeneous.
