A 0.61 kg sphere at 368 K is dropped into a thermally insulated container with 1 kg of water at 300 K.  The sphere and the water reach an equilibrium temperature of 310 K.  Water has a specific heat of 4182 J/(kg K).  What is the specific heat of the sphere in J/(kg K)?

Question

A 0.61 kg sphere at 368 K is dropped into a thermally insulated container with 1 kg of water at 300 K.  The sphere and the water reach an equilibrium temperature of 310 K.  Water has a specific heat of 4182 J/(kg K).  What is the specific heat of the sphere in J/(kg K)?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given :

Mass of Sphere (M) = 0.61 kg

Initial Temperature of Sphere = 368 K

Mass of Water (m) = 1 kg

Initial Temperature of water = 300 K

Specific Heat of Water (c) = 4182 J/ kg K

Let the Specific heat of Sphere be J/kg K

Final equilibrium temperature = 310 K

So,

Change in temperature (T) for sphere = 368 - 310T for sphere = 58 KChange in temperature (T) for water = (310 - 300)T for water = 10 K
