Sickle cell anemia is one of the group of disorders known as sickle cell disease. This disorder affects hemoglobin, a protein which carries oxygen through the body. Hemoglobin consist of two identical and two identical chains. In sickle cell anemia, the amino acid glutamate present at the 6th position in the -chain of hemoglobin is replaced by amino acid valine.
