Oxoanions- The polyatomic anions formed by the combination of non-metal and oxygen atoms are called polyatomic oxoanions. 

When there are only two possible oxyanions for an atom, the one having a larger number of oxygen atoms is named by ending with the suffix '-ate' and the one with the lower number of oxygen atoms is named by ending with the suffix '-ite'.

When there are more than two possible oxyanions for an atom, the one having the greatest number of oxygen atoms is named by adding the prefix '-per', and the one with the lowest number of oxygen atoms is named by adding the prefix '-hypo'.
