If the molecule is symmetric, then it is optically inactive.  The most applicable way to detect a molecule that it is symmetric or not is the detection of symmetry elements. 

If the symmetry elements present in the  compounds are sigma plane of symmetry or inversion centre or alternative axis of symmetry, then the molecule is optically inactive.
