3. While scuba diving you discover a sunken Spanish Galleon. You find a bronze cannon (with mass M = 1500 kg in the shape of a cylinder L = 1.50 m long with a radiusr = 5.00 cm) that has been sealed with a plug. You suspect the cannon is filled with gold and you want to bring it to the surface using a "lift bag". (A lift bag is an air-tight bag with straps which can be used to lift heavy underwater objects by means of the bag's buoyant force.) The cannon would hold a mass of m = 120 kg of gold (worth about $6.2 million). What volume V of air must be added to the lift bag to bring the cannon to the surface? Ignore the mass of the lift bag and the mass of the air in the lift bag. [The density of sea water p = 1025 kg/m³]
Fluid Pressure
The term fluid pressure is coined as, the measurement of the force per unit area of a given surface of a closed container. It is a branch of physics that helps to study the properties of fluid under various conditions of force.
Gauge Pressure
Pressure is the physical force acting per unit area on a body; the applied force is perpendicular to the surface of the object per unit area. The air around us at sea level exerts a pressure (atmospheric pressure) of about 14.7 psi but this doesn’t seem to bother anyone as the bodily fluids are constantly pushing outwards with the same force but if one swims down into the ocean a few feet below the surface one can notice the difference, there is increased pressure on the eardrum, this is due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure.
