3. Describe and draw 1) a polychaete that is a surface-dwelling raptorial feeder and 2) a tube-dwelling suspension feeder that live in oxygen-deprived water. Compare and contrast their feeding structures, setae, parapodia, and structures used for gas exchange. Why might segmentation be reduced in a tube dweller?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Nereis Worm (Polychaete)

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Annelida

Class: Polychaeta

Order: Phyllodocida

Family: Nereididae

Genus: Nereis

The bodies of the worms are long and slim, and they are flattened dorso-ventrally. The head is divided into two parts: an approximately triangular frontal lobe called the prostomium and a ring-like posterior portion called the peristomium. These worms are surface-dwelling raptorial feeders.

Polychaetes are soft-bodied animals. Nereis is mobile in nature. Parapodia, eyes, and sensory organs are typically well-developed in mobile forms. Furthermore, some species have chitinous jaws and an eversible pharynx.
