Question

Compare and contrast the body coverings of a free-living turbellarian, a monogenaen fluke, a cestode, and a nematode. Which problems does each solve or create? Be sure to consider locomotion, permeability, ciliation, and habitat, and to think of the entire life cycle.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Free-living Turbellarian

  • Named after turbulence created by the cilia in water.  These are free living bottom dwellers.
  • Both marine and freshwater.
  • There are carnivores and scavenger of small insects . Whereas some others are herbivores of algae . They possess chemoreceptors that can detect the chemical from the food that is far away .
  • They have a gastrovascular cavity with one opening . Highly branched gut transport food to all parts of the body , this is absent in the case of parasitic species ) .
  • Possess pharynx ,  a muscular tube that extended out of the mouth and pumps food to the gut.
  • It possess cilia on the epidermal cells , helps to glide through water and the bottom.. mucus layer is laid to help in adhesion and helps cilia to gain traction.
  • Muscle cells are controlled by the nervous system and helps then twist and turn for rapid response to the environmental stimuli. The dorsoventral muscle  are very essential for maintaining flatness ( for diffusion)  .
  • Protonephridia is a network of fine tubules for the excretion of the metabolic waste.
  • Can reproduce sexually be and cc asexually. Asexually through budding , fission, fragmentation. Sexually - monecious ( hermoprodite), oviparous ( lays eggs) , penal fencing etc .
