3. (a) Which of the two substances at the right would be more soluble in the solvent hexane H H HHH (C,H4)? Justify your response based on intermolecular forces that would exist H-C-C-0-C-C-H -C-C- C-C-H between hexane and the solute molecules. H. H. H H H Substance A Substance B (b) Which of the molecules is more hydrophilic and why? (~10 WoL) (c) Redraw the molecule you chose from part (b) showing how a water molecule might strongly interact with it. (IMFS can be drawn with a dashed line ----- between atoms)
3. (a) In this part of questions we have to compare the solubility of given two given compounds in hexane solvent.
•The Substance A and substance B both have ester group. But the difference between the both substance is the number of carbon chain.
• In case of substance A, there is ethyl group is attached with ester group and in substance B the butyl group is attached with the ester group.
• And the polarity of any compounds decreases with increasing the no. of carbon chain.
• Therefore the substance A is more polar as compared to Substance B. Because for A substance there is ethyl group(two carbon)attached and in B substance there is butyl group (four carbon chain).
• And as we know that in non polar solvent dissolves the less polar compound more easily as compared to the more polar solvent.
• Therefore the more polar substance A is more soluble in hexane as compared to Substance B.
