The Curious Case of the Rock and the Feather
One day, a curious young girl had an idea she wanted to test out. She walked to the
nearest forest to find the tallest tree she could climb, safely of course. She wanted to
see which object would hit the ground first: A rock or a feather. The young girl
carefully climbed up into the tree, stuck her arms straight out and dropped the two
objects at the exact same time. To her surprise, the rock hit the ground first. "The
feather is not heavy at all though," she thought to herself.
1. What force was acting on both objects?
2. Why does the rock hit the ground before the feather? What force is acting on
the feather other than gravity?
3. Would the outcome be different if she dropped two solid balls from the top of
the tree at the same time? Explain your answer.
