Expert Solution
Step 1

Cells build tissues, which make up the organs that form organ systems. The body tissues are organized into groups called organs. Each tissue consists of specialized cells to perform certain functions.

For example, the epithelial tissue is formed of epithelial cells which help cover the surface of the body and line its internal cavities and tubes.

Step 2

A. Microvilli are microscopic projections. They are extending from the surface of the plasma membrane of epithelial cells. The primary function of microvilli is to increase the surface area of the plasma membrane of epithelial cells. Cells with microvilli can be found throughout the small intestinal wall because the increased surface area is required to absorb digested nutrients.

B. Desmosomes or macula adherens, resemble a button between neighboring epithelial cells. Each cell form half of the entire desmosome. It is a single small region that holds neighboring cells together and provides resistance to mechanical stress at potential stress points, but it does not completely encircle a cell like the tight junctions.  So it is not an effective barrier to the diffusion of substances across an epithelium. Therefore tight junction between epithelial cells is an effective barrier to the diffusion of substances across an epithelium.
