Expert Solution
Step 1

Neurons are the major components of the central nervous system and plays a major role in transmitting information between themselves and other types of cells such as muscle cells. It is composed of three parts namely;

  • a cell body(composed of cytoplasm and nucleus)
  • dendrites
  • an axon.

Axon is covered by a fatty substance called myelin sheath with gaps or nodes of Ranvier. These aid in faster transmission of nerve impulses. The cell body of neurons is impermeable to charged ions. Thus, these ions enter into neurons through voltage gated ion channels. These channels maintain the concentration of ions between the neuronal membrane.

The difference in the charge between the inside and the outside of the membrane is termed as the membrane potential.
