13.1 The initial total mass of the Saturn V rocket, which launched Apollo 11 to the Moon (see a movie clip on Blackboard), was 2.8 x 106 kg, and the mass of the first-stage fuel was 2.1 x 106 kg. Also assume that the thrust was 37 x 106 N, that the exhaust speed u was 2600 m/s, and that you can neglect drag. (a) Calculate the rate r = (b) After what time did the first stage burn out (assuming r is constant)? (c) Calculate the rocket's velocity vz at the “burnout time" of the first stage (which is defined by when the mass of the rocket is equal to its dry mass, Mp). dm,/ dt at which the Saturn V rocket expelled mass.
Rigid Body
A rigid body is an object which does not change its shape or undergo any significant deformation due to an external force or movement. Mathematically speaking, the distance between any two points inside the body doesn't change in any situation.
Rigid Body Dynamics
Rigid bodies are defined as inelastic shapes with negligible deformation, giving them an unchanging center of mass. It is also generally assumed that the mass of a rigid body is uniformly distributed. This property of rigid bodies comes in handy when we deal with concepts like momentum, angular momentum, force and torque. The study of these properties – viz., force, torque, momentum, and angular momentum – of a rigid body, is collectively known as rigid body dynamics (RBD).
