While doing research on subduction zones off of the coast of New Zealand in the South
Pacific Ocean, you and your crew encounter a massive storm which leaves you shipwrecked on
an uncharted island. The native islanders have rescued you but since you don't speak their
language nor understand their culture, you inadvertently insult their Chief. As a result, you have
now become a human sacrifice to the volcano, Big Puff, which has been erupting with increasing
regularity over the past several weeks. They tie you to a post about 2 miles [3.2 km] from the
volcano's main vent and leave you there to go prepare a celebration feast to honor the Chief.
While you try to wiggle free, you look at the smoking volcano. It is very tall and has steep
sides. The rocks at your feet you recognize as a mixture of andesite, tuff and ignimbrite. As the
ground begins to shake violently, you realize that a big eruption is coming soon !
