3. Toby and Sean are 4 year old boys due for DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and Pertussis ) boosters. Their mothers warned them both the injection might cause some discomfort however, they were reassured that the pain was well worth the benefit. Toby got so scared that his mother decided to postpone going to the doctor. Sean was also afraid but was brave enough to have his shot. Explain why it was beneficial for SEAN to receive his booster. Discuss the differences between the antibody titers between Toby and Sean after Sean received his booster shot.
4. Tetanus is caused by bacteria that enter the body through wounds in the skin. The bacteria produce a toxin which causes spastic muscle contractions. A patient goes to the emergency room after stepping on a nail. If the person has been vaccinated against tetanus, he is given a booster which consists of the toxin. If the patient has never been vaccinated against tetanus, he is given an antiserum shot against tetanus. Explain the rationale for this treatment strategy. Sometimes both booster and antiserum are given at different locations of the body. Explain why this is done.
