Commercial Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA) is an ester of
salicylic acid. It is one of the most commonly used drugs in the
world. First Nations peoples also used salicylic acid for
medicinal purposes-their sources however, such as willow
bark, were natural.
Today's commercial Aspirin uses modifications like
esterification to provide pain relief with fewer negative side
effects. The commercial Aspirin synthesis is accomplished using
benzene as a reactant. The reactions for the commercial
synthesis and for an alternative method are summarized in the
following diagrams:

1. Describe what happens in a substitution reaction. Identify a
step in the processes shown in which a substitution reaction
occurs.
2. Provide the structural formula for the substance used to
convert salicylic acid into Aspirin.
3. From a greening perspective, give two advantages and one
disadvantage of using the alternative method for
synthesizing Aspirin.
1) A substitution reaction is when the functional group of one chemical
compound is substituted by another group.
2) (CH3CO)₂ O acetic anhydride
