Background: Genre: Folklore

The Pearl is based on a Mexican folk legend Steinbeck had heard during his travels. The legend is transposed into the context of the American Dream and explores the tensions between distinct civilizational ethos, as embodied by the conflict between Kino, the protagonist, and a set of exploitative pearl buyers.
