Characters

Ralph

Ralph is the original leader of the group of boys stranded on the island. He tries to strike a balance between their tendency to seek thrills and maintaining order and decorum on the island. He believes that the group must keep the signal fire burning to ensure their rescue. He also believes that being rescued is better than trying to forge life anew on the island.

Jack

Like Ralph, Jack, too, is well-suited for leadership. He is aware of his abilities as a leader and finds it difficult to accept an inferior role on the island. Jack is also a hunter and believes that hunting, more than any other task, is central to the group’s survival. He questions Ralph’s leadership, which results in a violent rebellion. When two boys are killed in the rebellion, the spirit of the Lord of the Flies takes over the island.

Piggy

Piggy is a physically frail boy with poor social skills. He is also prone to complaining, which makes him unpopular among the boys. He is killed by a falling boulder.

Simon

Simon is an introspective boy who prefers solitude. He retreats to the deepest parts of the jungle to contemplate the group’s situation. He is more attuned to nature than the other boys and is able to sense that an evil spirit has taken hold of Jack’s camp. He discovers the truth about the spirit, but is killed before he can alert the others.

Roger

Roger is notorious for his bullying and cruel behavior. When the island descends into chaos, he becomes its Chief Torturer and Executioner.

Samneric

Samneric is the name assigned to the twins Sam and Eric. They think and act as one person. They stand by Ralph during Jack’s rebellion, but are later captured, tortured, and forcefully assimilated into Jack’s group.
