Piero Callirgos Professor Plata ENC 1101 15 September 2023 Miami Dade College ENC 1101- Professor M. Plata Chapter 6: Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder, Didn’t Call the Police C.W. # 2 (Worth 30 points) Due by 11:59 pm on Friday, September 15 th Directions: Answer each question below as specifically and briefly as possible with responses from the story as well as our class discussion. Comprehension 1. According to Gansberg, how much time elapsed between the first stabbing of Kitty Genovese and the time when the people finally came out? (Worth 1 point) 65 minutes had passed between the first stabbing of Kitty Genovese and the time of when the people came out. Kitty was first stabbed at 3:20 am and the people came out at 4:25 am after the ambulance had driven away. 2. What excuses do the neighbors make for not coming to Kitty Genovese's aid? (Provide at least 3 excuses- worth 3 points) They thought it was a lover’s quarrel. They were too tired and returned to bed. They did not want to get involved Purpose and Audience 1. This article appeared in 1964, just two week s after the incident. What effect was it intended to have on its audience? Do you think it has the same impact today, or has its impact changed or diminished? (Worth 3 points) The article’s effect was to leave the reader in a state of shock and dismay that so many people can witness a woman being killed. It does have the same impact today because people should help each other when needed. 2. What is the article's main point? Why does Gansberg imply his thesis rather than state it explicitly? (Worth 3 points) 38 witnesses are morally guilty of a woman’s death as they did nothing while she was stabbed and killed. Gansberg implies his thesis to allow the reader to come to come to their conclusion that the 38 witnesses should have called the police, possibly saving her life if so .
Piero Callirgos Professor Plata ENC 1101 15 September 2023 3. What is Gansberg's purpose in describing the Austin Street area as "staid, middle-class, tree-lined?" (Provide 3 reasons for a total of 3 points) In narratives, the setting is typically described. To show that the witnesses are capable of calling for help since they have phones. Crimes like this do not usually occur in this type of neighborhood, so the witnesses should be more shocked and would react . 4. Why do you suppose Gansberg provides the police department's phone number in this article? (Note that New York City did not have 911 emergency service in 1964- Worth 2 points) Gansberg provides the details of the police department’s phone number to educate and inform people of what to do. People reading this article in 1964 now know what number dial when there is violence or danger going on. Writing Workshop In your own words, write a seven to ten-sentence summary of this article. Try to reflect Gansberg's order and emphasis, as well as his ideas, and be sure to include all necessary transitions. ( Worth 15 points) Catherine Genovese, often referred to as kitty, was heading home after her shift at the bar, Hollis. She notices a man at the end the street and hurries home and he follow her. Kitty’s neighbors scared him off cheaply and multiple times, but this didn’t stop him from fatally stabbing her. Gansberg emphasizes the amount of people who witnessed a woman being stabbed and killed, and their character. These respectable, law-abiding citizens living in Kew Gardens, a middle-class community, should have called the police and reported the attacks on morale alone. He emphasizes the amount of time and opportunities there was to save this woman and these 38 people decided to do nothing or call for help extremely late. There seemed to be excuse after excuse and Inspector Frederick M. Lussen, who oversaw the case, was left baffled with the Kew Gardens slaying.
