Look at the Jellyblubbers colony.
Pick out 10 Jellyblubbers that you think are a good representation of the entire
population.
Using the extra sheet, record the lengths of each of the Jellyblubbers that you picked in the table
below.

2.
What is the average length of the 10 Jellyblubbers from your sample above?
Average Length of the 10 Jellyblubblers was….25.3 from my sample.
3.
Describe the process you used to select your Jellyblubbers.
I looked at the Jellyblubbers and chose different sizes from the perspective of my eyes. I tried to pick the
smallest blubber and the biggest blubber I could pick out. I also tried to chose ones from all over the board to
make it more “random” or “equal”.
4.
Would you consider this a simple random sample?
Why or why not?
I honestly would not consider my sample to be random. I put too much thought into picking the blubbers, trying
to include different sized blubbers from all across the colony. It is human error are this point as I chose my
blubbers based on trying to include all different sizes in my sample. Closing my eyes and throwing darts at my
computer screen and just recording the blubber the dart hit would be more random then the way I collected my
sample from the colony.
Use Excel or Google Sheets to randomly generate 10 Jellyblubber numbers from the 100 possible Jellyblubbers. Record
the Jellyblubber numbers and the lengths of the Jellyblubbers that Excel selected.

5.
What is the average length of the 10 Jellyblubbers from your sample above?
The Average Length of the 10 Jellyblubbers is… 16.8 from the sample above.
6.
Would you consider this a simple random sample?
Why or why not?
I would consider this a random sample, as it was generated and not studied by the human eye. The
generator had no clue what number was each Jellyblubber and what the jellyblubber looked like. It gave a more
random set of numbers by being blind to the data which can help in random sampling.
7.
When you are done through question #6, please fill out the Google Forms questionnaire with your answers to #2
and #5. Please do so before 9:00 tonight. A second video will follow later tonight/tomorrow morning with
instructions to complete the rest of this activity.
8.
Suppose I didn’t have a random number generator and I was given the sheet of Jellyblubbers.
To randomly pick
10 Jellyblubbers I blindly placed my finger somewhere on the sheet.
If I landed on a Jellyblubber I recorded the
Jellyblubber number and length.
If I did not land on a Jellyblubber I did not record anything.
I repeat this
process until my finger has successfully landed on a Jellyblubber 10 times.
Would you consider this a simple
random sample?
Why or why not?
I would agree that this method is a simple random sample. It is taking away the human factor of looking
at the jellyblubbers and picking them based on their different sizes as I did. This would be a more
randomized way to pick the jellyblubbers. My only concern is that what if you finger lands on two
jellyblubbers, what do you do then? Do you pick one or record neither? This method is good if given all
the directions on what to do for different scenarios. So, others can perform the same method efficiently
as well.
9.
Identify the following for this survey. (I am looking for more than just numbers here, but you may use numbers
in your answer.)
Population: All Jellyblubbers_________
Individual:____A Jellyblubber___________
Sample:___The 10 Selected Jellyblubbers____________
10.

11.
The true mean length of all Jellyblubbers is 19.4 mm.
Which value from #10 is closer?
Should our estimates be
exact?
Why or why not?
What could we do to get closer to the exact value?
The Random Sample is closer to the true mean length. Our estimates aren’t always exact as it is
completely random. To get closer to the exact value we could eliminate more human error, as possibly
when selecting the randomizer, they clicked too fast and skipped over a number, or just lied about their
numbers because they couldn’t get the randomizer to work. Perhaps we were just given random
numbers by a website or our teacher.
When you are done, please email

this document for full credit. One of the 4 points will be
based on getting your results in from #2 and #6 via Google Forms and the other 3 points will be based on
completion/valid effort on the rest of the questions.
