2 Plastic is an affordable, versatile material that appears in every consumer market. The popularity of plastic in single-use packaging has resulted in astonishing levels of plastic product waste on a global scale. Plastic, unlike other materials, does not break down or biodegrade. It can take up to 1,000 years to naturally decompose, so it builds up in land fills and the environment suffers. The convenience and standardization of single use plastics have split public opinions on the issue. (UNEP, 2023.) Plastic is considered one of the biggest culprits of ocean and land pollution. Plastic production is done using a variety of toxic chemicals that often cause harm to the environment. The recycling process for plastics can be very expensive and has environmental risks associated with it. This material is combustible in nature and burning it releases toxic materials. Plastics in the environment cause harm to wildlife when ingested and it degrades soil quality. The consequences of the production, use, and disposal of plastics are extensive. (Koli, 2022.) The environmental impact of plastic is compelling, but the wide-spread use makes it difficult to completely eliminate using this material. A common use is food packaging as it is a reliable way to keep it safe and clean. The low cost of production and lightweight of the material make it attractive compared to alternatives. It has great insulation properties and has high durability. The shock absorption, corrosion resistance, and water-resistance make plastic valuable for a variety of purposes. The main advantage of plastic is its versatility, which influences conflicting public opinions. (Koli, 2022.) The United States has introduced a number of policies and programs to address the environmental impact of plastic pollution. These include the national recycling strategy, sustainable materials management program, and trash free waters program. Government initiatives have improved public awareness of the effects of plastic pollution in recent years. The
3 presentation of the environmental consequences of plastic use has helped reduce consumption and encouraged the use of alternative materials. The impacts on public understanding can be seen in the movements against plastic water bottle, straw, and bag usage. Existing policies serve to increase public awareness of the issue, but plastic production will continue as long as corporations avoid taking responsibility for their part in environmental degradation. (U.S. Department of State, 2022.)
