No late homework will be accepted for credit! *On the top of the first page, remember to write your name. *If a problem does not specify how to compute the answer, you may use any appropriate method. *Explanation or work must be shown to receive full credit. The TA will grade for correctness and clarity. *Recommended Reading: Textbook Chapter 3 sections 1-4, Chapter 4, Sections 4.1-4.6 0.1 Textbook Exercises Chapter 3 Review Exercises (pages 50-55) 4, 7, 8 Chapter 4 Review Exercises (pages 74-76) 1 (use population formulas), 2, 4 (see pages 37, 39 for histograms of data), 9 0.2 Non Textbook Exercises 1. States that experience four seasons tend to have more issues with potholes because of the changes in tem- perature and variety of precipitation. The Department of Transportation for Michigan is considering how much money they need to allocate to ensure the state’s roads are safe for travel. They’ve taken a random sample of 500 roads from the state and then selected a random mile of that road to evaluate for repairs. On each mile stretch, they’ve recorded the length (in meters) that requires repairs. Below is the distribution table for the length in meters in need of repair: Length 0-5 5-10 10-12 12-20 20-40 Count 217 176 54 38 15 (a) Create the [density] histogram of length in need of repair. Don’t forget to label axes. (b) Determine the percentage of sampled roads that have 12 meters or longer in need of repair. (c) Give a possible range for the median length of road in need of repair. (d) Would you estimate the mean length of road in need of repair to be larger than, smaller than, or have similar value to the median you found above? Why? 1
Stat 301 Spring 2022 2. Barry Bonds set the major league record by hitting 73 home runs in a single season in 2001. On August 7, 2007, Bonds hit his 756th career home run, which broke Hank Aaron’s longstanding record of 755. By the end of the 2007 season which Bonds retired, he had increased the total to 762. Here are data on the number of home runs that Bonds hit in each of his 21 complete seasons ordered from 1986 to 2007 (excluding the partial year 2005): 16 , 25 , 24 , 19 , 33 , 25 , 34 , 46 , 37 , 33 , 42 , 40 , 37 , 34 , 49 , 73 , 46 , 45 , 45 , 26 , 28 . (a) Create a dotplot of Barry Bonds’s home run data. (b) What interesting feature of the data is made apparent in the graph? (c) What interesting information is lost by presenting the home run data in the dot plot? 3. Sixteen milk-yielding Ayrshire cows were fed a diet of silage that was supplemented with a vitamin con- tentrate. The following values refer to the milk fat concentration (g/kg) for each cow. 20 , 38 , 44 , 49 , 42 , 21 , 48 , 47 21 , 22 , 23 , 26 , 26 , 44 , 48 , 29 (a) Create a stem-and-leaf display with two lines per stem. (b) What interesting feature of the data is made apparent when put into the stem-and-leaf display? (c) Calculate the mean [average] and median and explain why reporting a center for this data (mean or median) without providing a graph of the data is not very useful. (d) Construct a box plot of this data. Identify whether the box plot or stem-and-leaf is more useful for this data and explain why. 4. Does eating oatmeal reduce cholesterol? An advertisement included the following graph as evidence that the answer is ”Yes”. (a) How is this graph misleading? 2
Stat 301 Spring 2022 (b) Would it be appropriate to show this graph as a pie chart? 5. With all the described situations below, decide what graph or graphs would be the most appropriate. Your choices for appropriate graphs include Dot plot, Stem and Leaf Plot, Histogram, Bar chart, Pie chart, boxplot.(I put in parenthesis how many graphs I am looking for) (a) Maximum temperature in degrees Fahrenheit of 7 days in Madison randomly chosen throughout the year (2) (b) Colors of 100 gummy bears in a bag (2) (c) 1,000 people categorized as employed or not employed in WI (2) (d) Number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie pop gathered from 800 adults (2) (e) Scores from 30 students on a 5 point multiple choice quiz (whole points only) (2) 6. Calculate the standard deviation by hand for the number of siblings reported by a sample of students in a summer school course using the sample formula and show your work. (Keep at least three decimal places in intermediate steps) Number of Siblings 0 1 2 3 4 Number of Students Reporting 5 7 3 2 1 7. You are interested in knowing about the weight distribution of the Green Bay Packers football team. The 2017 team roster gives the weights of each of the players. You can find all the weights (in lbs) below: 188 , 188 , 189 , 192 , 195 , 195 , 196 , 197 , 200 , 200 , 201 , 202 , 207 , 208 , 209 , 211 , 211 , 212 , 215 , 216 , 216 , 217 , 218 , 219 , 220 , 225 , 226 , 227 , 232 , 234 , 237 , 240 , 245 , 245 , 245 , 246 , 252 , 254 , 255 , 255 , 255 , 257 , 261 , 265 , 285 , 287 , 296 , 298 , 300 , 301 , 301 , 305 , 305 , 310 , 310 , 313 , 314 , 314 , 318 , 318 , 322 , 324 (a) Create a boxplot of the data above. (b) Looking at the boxplot (and not calculating), would you think the average would be to the right, left, or at the same point as the median? Why? (c) Which measure of center would you choose in this case to best represent the data? 3
