Spring 2024 ELCI 7083 Observation of Data Collection Techniques Overview In this assignment, practice ONE of the observation techniques presented this week in Chapter 13: categorical frequencies, performance indicators, visual diagramming, space utilization, verbatim, detached open-ended narratives, participant observation, focused questionnaire, and tailored observation systems. To complete this assignment, you will observe a live teaching episode. Then apply ONLY ONE of the observation techniques. Directions This assignment consists of three tasks: Observe a lesson and observe using the technique of your choice within the text. Completing the observation forms (record your observation techniques by taking notes on the related form you design. Use the examples in Chapter 13 to guide your form/notes.) Completing the questions found at the end of this document You must complete all parts to receive credit. 1. To begin, determine the purpose of observation and select one of the observation tech- niques demonstrated in Chapter 13. 2. Next, observe a live teaching episode. 3. Complete the Observation technique template found at the end of this document. 4. Submit the completed observation forms and the question technique template. To submit handwritten observation form(s), you must first scan them. Your iPhone or an- droid phone will allow you to scan and email the forms to your computer. If you do not know how, please google the directions.
Spring 2024 ELCI 7083 Observation Technique Template: In addition to completing the observation form you create, respond to the following questions. You will submit the documents separately. (You can attach more than one document in your submission.) Task 1: Purpose Write a description of the classroom, learning activities, and teacher-student interactions from your perspective as supervisor. The classroom was very welcoming. The teachers made sure there were anchor charts to reinforce learning. Students came in and knew exactly what they needed to do. All the activities for the day or written on the board as well as project-based objectives. The students started class by getting their materials and putting up their backpacks. Then they proceeded to take a vocabulary quiz that they do every Friday. Once everyone was done, graphing their scores, then they proceeded to do a class activity. Well students were doing their bill, work and vocabulary quiz. The teacher walked around to make sure that all students were on task to answer any questions. During the class lesson they were very interactive. The teacher had students enter out loud individually and demonstrate as a group. State the name of the formative observation instrument used. What is the purpose of this technique for you? What data were you focusing on and why? How do you plan to use this data to make instructional decisions? I use the focused questionnaire observation instrument. I used this technique to answer questions that directly related to the classroom and the community. I focused on the classroom environment, teacher, interaction, student interaction, and how the lesson tied into the standards and into real life experiences. As a school, one of the main focuses and goals for the year is to make sure that we are teaching lessons that can help students in real life experience answers and improve engagement in the classroom. I plan to use this data to make instructional decisions by finding ways to incorporate more outside experiences in real world problems into the curriculum. Task 2: Reflection Reflect upon using this observation data collection technique. What are your strengths in using it? What are your areas for growth when using it? Were you able to collect data to use in making instructional decisions? What will you change in your process when you use it the next time? Strength in using this tool was the ability to know exactly what I was looking for within the classroom. I know exactly what I was looking for so that I didn’t have to write down a whole bunch of things. My areas for growth when using it is to incorporate more questions. Maybe I can find some more in-depth questions that will help pull out data that can help me build on it. I was able to collect data to use and making instructional decisions. Although I felt that I
Spring 2024 ELCI 7083 could have collected more data. The lesson that was demonstrated was very thorough and allowed me to get exactly what I needed. What I will change in the process when I use the next time is incorporating more questions. I may break down the last question that asks about the assignments, and how they indicate consideration of what is happening in the community. I will also, add a question that specifically ask the teacher what they felt. The students were getting out of the assignment as well as asking the students what they felt they should be getting out of the assignment. (Rubric on the following page.) Criteria Exemplary Acceptable Unacceptable Purpose of the Observati on Technique 10 Points Explains the purpose of the observation data collection technique clearly and completely. Cites what kind of data will be obtained and has a thorough understanding of how the technique can be used to make instructional decisions. 8 Points Explains the purpose of the observation data collection technique with general understanding of the purpose of the technique. Demonstrates some understanding of how the technique can be used to make instructional decisions. 3 Points Presents a minimal understanding of the purpose of the observation data collection technique. Has little citing of what kind of data will be obtained and demonstrates little evidence of understanding of how the technique will be used to make instructional decisions. Reflective of the Observati on Technique 10 Points Displays thoughtful awareness and shows a strong depth of reflection thoroughly describing: What the strengths are using it? What areas for growth 8 Points Displays awareness and shows evidence of reflection describing: What the strengths are using it? What areas for growth are when 3 Points Displays a limited awareness and lacks in reflection and depth the following: What the strengths are using it? What areas for growth are when using it?
